“This is the first time in my life that I feel this bad”: Andrey Rublev reveals plans of going to hospital on Monday despite winning Madrid Open

It’s definitely unexpected. Rublev hasn’t disclosed the specifics, but it’s common for athletes to experience physical strain or injuries during intense competitions. Hopefully, it’s nothing too serious and he makes a swift recovery.

Rublev expressed concern about his health, mentioning that he had been unwell for about eight or nine days, which was unusual for him. He revealed that he had to use anesthesia to play in the final match and planned to return to the hospital for a thorough examination to determine the cause of his prolonged illness. He noted that typically he only gets sick for two or three days with a mild fever, but this time was different, stating it was the first time in his life he felt so unwell.

Rublev explained that an anaesthetic was administered to his toe because it had become inflamed and swollen, causing pressure on the bone and making it impossible for him to even wear his shoe. He likened the sensation to when a bone is broken. Despite the pain, he played on without being affected by the discomfort. He acknowledged Felix’s performance and emphasized that they both put up a great battle, ultimately highlighting the nature of sports where there can only be one winner.
